The Four Primary Types of Construction
Building and infrastructure form a significant part of the construction industry, along with civil engineering and architecture. All of these involve the use of detailed design and planning of various elements for it to deliver the final product of a structure. These projects are supervised by a construction engineer, manager, or project architect.
The construction industry consists of four primary types:
- Residential building.
One of the most common types of construction includes construction residential housing. It involves repairing, building, and the remodeling of structures for housing, equipment, and supplies. Projects include townhouses, condos, apartments, nursing homes, and dormitories. Garages and outbuildings are also considered residential constructions. All of it involves the installation and repair of these utilities, such as electricity, water, and maintenance around structures built. These projects are designed by architects and engineers and are executed by construction companies.
- Specialized industrial construction.
This type of construction specializes in industrial construction, which entails building structures that require a significant level of specialization and technical skills regarding planning, design, and construction. It is carried out for industrial or profit corporations, like the chemical industry that builds structures for power generation or oil refineries.
- Institutional and commercial building.
The third type of construction encompasses the building of sports arenas, hospitals, stadiums, schools, skyscrapers, and shopping centers. Just like residential housing construction, this type involves the resurrection of structures, the repair and maintenance thereof by private owners from companies. Stadiums, educational, and medical facilities usually get financed and managed by the national or local government.
- Infrastructure and heavy construction.
Construction that involves infrastructure and heavy works include building and upgrading communications, roads, and railway systems for a city. It is carried out as a matter of public interest, which is supported and executed by large private corporations and government agencies.
