Cement Calculator

Cement Calculator

Estimate how much cement you need for your building project. Use the calculator below to work out your requirements using the inputs provided, then confirm the quantity and mix specifications with your supplier or contractor.

Cement is an ingredient used in concrete, mortar and some plaster mixes. The amount required depends on the application, specified mix and cement bag size.

Construction calculator

Cement Calculator

Enter your project measurements for a planning estimate.

Enter prices in your selected currency. Changing currency does not apply an exchange rate. Sample measurements are editable; prices default to zero.

Method & assumptions

Use the cement content specified by your supplier or engineer. The example is not a concrete mix design.

All applicable wastage percentages are added to the net quantity. Whole packs, bags and pieces are rounded up.

Planning estimate only. Confirm quantities, product specifications and rates with your supplier or contractor. This tool does not provide structural design or establish compliance with local building rules.

How to Use the Cement Calculator

  1. Check the calculator’s application. Make sure its method matches the concrete, mortar or other mix you are estimating.
  2. Enter your project quantities. Follow the measurement units beside each field.
  3. Check the mix details. Use the specification recommended for your project.
  4. Check the cement bag size. Your estimate must match the weight of the bags you intend to purchase.
  5. Review the result. Round up to whole bags when ordering and confirm any additional allowance with your contractor.

Only use settings supported by the calculator. A calculation intended for concrete should not be applied directly to mortar or plaster.

How to Calculate the Number of Cement Bags

If you already know the required cement weight:

Number of bags = Required cement weight ÷ Weight per bag

For example, if your specified mix requires 250 kg of cement and each bag contains 50 kg:

250 ÷ 50 = 5 bags

This example converts a known cement weight into bags. It does not determine the correct cement content or mix for your project.

What Affects Cement Requirements?

The amount of cement needed depends on the application, specified mix, total quantity being prepared and material properties.

Concrete, bricklaying mortar, plaster and screed can have different requirements. Volume-based mix proportions also require appropriate conversion assumptions; the finished volume alone does not directly establish the cement weight.

Use project specifications and product instructions when planning your materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cement and concrete?

Cement is a binding ingredient. Concrete generally combines cement, water, sand and coarse aggregate. Buying cement alone does not provide all the materials needed to make concrete.

How many cement bags do I need per cubic metre of concrete?

The quantity depends on the specified concrete mix and required performance. There is no single bag quantity suitable for every application. Confirm the specification with your contractor, engineer or concrete supplier.

Can I use this calculator for mortar or plaster?

Only if the calculator explicitly supports that application. Concrete, mortar and plaster calculations use different assumptions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does cement bag size affect the result?

Yes. A smaller bag contains less cement, so more bags are needed for the same total cement weight. Check the bag weight before ordering.

Should I round up the number of bags?

When purchasing whole bags, round the final quantity up to the next whole bag. Discuss any further allowance for handling losses or additional work with your contractor.

Does adding more cement always make a mix better?

No. Mix performance depends on the correct balance of materials, water content, preparation, placement and curing. Follow the specified mix rather than changing proportions yourself.
